Description

The Chadwell Millennium Green (CMG) is at Percival Gardens, Chadwell Heath, RM6 5RJ. It’s a farmer allotments site that fell into disuse. It was created by local residents as wildlife haven within The Chadwell Heath area and as an open green space for the local community to hold events. It consists of places to sit and for picnics, as open grand area, two copses in middle and rear of the site and a wetland area.

About

Chadwell Millennium Greens is a small park in Chadwell Heath, Romford, northern-east London. Despite not being the most evident or clear from the outside, the park is perfect for relaxation and is a quiet haven for wildlife.

The urban green is tucked away more or less out of sight to most people, as it is surrounded by houses and was created where houses once stood, however it saves all of its natural beauty for when you enter.

As a breathing space, it is quite perfectly suited for a variety of uses. With its wide range of plant life, local schools can take visits to educate pupils. Its location provides the perfect opportunity for celebration of national events under the direction of the local authority and local residents' wishes. Community events can also take place in co-operation with local charities due to all the space.

The local community is one that cares about this area and strives to maintain the space.

History:

In the late 1990’s, Redbridge Council identified the allotments site as a prime development opportunity for disposal to a third party. The allotments had fallen into disuse but local residents appreciated the natural wildlife haven that had fought to secure a long lease to transform it into a community garden and wildlife haven. The timing of this coincided with the countryside commission and Heritage Lottery Fund organising the aeration of 250 green spaces across Britain know as Millennium Greens. Funding was provided to assists in setting up such spaces with 50% coming from the above organisations and the remainder through donations, fund raising aid with volunteers carrying our all the work. The CMG was created this way.

Millennium Feature

The feature is a circular mosaic designed by the children of the local primary school of St. Chad. The mosaic is set into the ground in a circle of seats near the entrance to the Green.
